How Neurons Communicate and Build Networks in the Brain

Have you ever wondered how neurons in the brain communicate and connect to create thoughts, feelings, and movements?
In this interactive workshop, you’ll discover how electrical signals are generated in the brain and how they travel through neural networks.

About This Workshop

Science in Practice

Ljubica Cimeša, a researcher and engineer with a PhD in Neuroscience (ENS Paris) and a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering (ETH Zurich), will guide you through practical examples and experiments where you’ll have the chance to adjust parameters yourself and observe real-time changes in brain activity.

She has extensive experience in artificial intelligence, signal processing, and neuroengineering, as well as in startup environments, having worked on projects involving brain-computer interfaces, neuromorphic systems, and medical applications of AI.

Through this unique approach, Ljubica demonstrates how theoretical knowledge transforms into real experiments and tangible results, merging science, technology, and curiosity into one engaging experience.

How Does the Brain Work?

Through engaging examples and clear explanations, you’ll discover how electrical impulses allow the brain to receive and process information from the outside world. You’ll learn the basic principles of how neurons function and see how these activities can be measured and visualized in real time. The workshop helps you understand how brain science connects to everyday life, from movement to emotion.

Why Join?

If you want to explore how the brain truly works and experience neuroscience first-hand, this workshop is the perfect opportunity. In a relaxed and interactive environment, you’ll learn the fundamental principles behind brain function and see science come to life in a fun and accessible way.

Backyard Brains OpenLab Series 5/5: From Impulse to Invention – Become a Bioengineer
December 22, 2025 — 18:00–20:00

This is the grand finale of the series, the moment when your biological signals become creative material. In this workshop, you will design and build your own interactive project: from EMG-controlled light installations, to neurofeedback soundscapes, to performances in which one participant influences another through their biological signals. This is a laboratory where ideas turn […]
