Backyard Brains' OpenLab Series 1/4: The Current of Life – Discovering Electrophysiology

Backyard Brains’ OpenLab presents a series of four interactive workshops to be held on November 24 and 27, and December 1 and 4, 2025. The series is designed to guide participants through the complete research process, from hands-on measurement and data analysis to the final presentation of their own mini research project.

About This Workshop

About the Lecturer

The workshop is led by Aleksa Vasić, Biologist (MSc).  As a science popularizer, Aleksa combines biology, neuroscience, and technology to make modern scientific discoveries accessible to everyone. Through practical demonstrations, he shows how the electrical signals that control our bodies can be observed, measured, and interpreted using simple devices.

How does bioelectrical activity in the body work?

The first workshop in the Backyard Brains’ OpenLab series introduces participants to the world of bioelectrical signals and electrophysiology. Through engaging examples and simple explanations, you’ll discover how electrical signals enable the body to function and respond to external stimuli. You’ll learn the basic principles of action potentials and see how these activities can be measured in real time. The workshop helps you understand how the science of electrophysiology connects physical reactions with our everyday experiences.

Science through practice

During the workshop, participants will use Human SpikerBox and Neuron SpikerBox devices to measure muscle activity and responses to external stimuli. Through hands-on demonstrations and interactive exercises, you’ll be able to observe real electrical impulses and learn how data is recorded and analyzed.
