A Stroll Through the Cosmos: Astronomy from the Armchair
While it’s cold and cloudy outside, let’s move astronomy into the comfort of our armchairs.
With the help of open and free tools available on the internet, we’ll embark on a journey through space: we’ll start in our cosmic neighborhood, the Solar System, then race through our galaxy, the Milky Way, and finally peek even deeper into the vastness of the cosmos. We’ll talk about astronomy, astrophysics and astrobiology, as well as everything intriguing that inevitably appears along the way.
About This Workshop
What will you learn?
In this workshop, you will learn how to use modern, free astronomical tools that allow you to explore space from the comfort of your home. We'll start with our Solar System: you'll get to know the planets, their moons, and other celestial bodies that are in our cosmic neighborhood. Then we'll venture deeper into our galaxy, the Milky Way, where you'll discover how stars and star clusters are distributed in our galaxy. We continue our journey even further, to distant galaxies, where you'll understand how astronomers measure unimaginable distances and study objects that are millions of light years away from us.
Through hands-on work with software and instructor explanations, you will gain basic knowledge of astronomy, astrophysics and astrobiology, understand the difference between different celestial objects, learn how distances in space are measured, and discover what science tells us about the possibilities for life beyond our planet. This workshop will give you the tools and knowledge to continue your own astronomical journey even after the workshop!
About the instructor
Boris Klobučar has been involved in science communication for over 10 years. During this career, he has presented and created fun science programs in physics, mathematics, astronomy, electronics and electrical engineering, programming, biology, chemistry, and everything in between! He loves spending his time gazing at the starry sky or immersed in books, and he wants to share this interest, curiosity, and passion with you!What to bring
