Backyard Brains' OpenLab Series 2/4: When Electrical Signals Reveal Secrets – The Journey from Noise to a Clear Impulse

How do you find the life-defining signal in a sea of electrical noise?

We’re continuing the Backyard Brains’ OpenLab workshop series (November 24 & 27 and December 1 & 4, 2025), taking you from the basics of measurement all the way to the final presentation of your mini research project.

In these workshops, you’ll have the chance to step into the role of a neuroscientist. You’ll turn your ideas into scientific hypotheses, test them through data collection and analysis, and finally design your own scientific poster and present your results — just like at a real scientific conference!

About This Workshop

About the Lecturer

The workshop is led by Aleksa Vasić, M.Sc. in Biology. As a science communicator, Aleksa brings together biology, neuroscience, and technology to make modern scientific discoveries accessible to the broader public. Through hands-on demonstrations, he shows how the electrical signals that control our bodies can be observed, measured, and interpreted using simple devices.

How to Become a Neuroscientist?

At this stage, you become the researcher! It’s not enough to simply hear or see a signal — the real challenge is understanding what it means. In this workshop, we move from basic observation to forming scientific hypotheses, collecting data, and analyzing results. Are you ready to take control of scientific instruments, develop your own hypotheses, and set the stage for your own experiment?

Learning Science Through Practice

You’ll learn how to use Backyard Brains devices to measure the body’s electrical signals. The focus will be on data analysis: you’ll be able to distinguish noise, identify brain or muscle waves, and isolate important impulses. Through discussion, you’ll also start planning your own experiments — what would you like to investigate? You’ll have the opportunity to design your very own scientific experiment!

Why Join?

This workshop combines neuroscience, biology, and engineering in an accessible, fun, and interactive format. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to experience science firsthand and develop the critical thinking skills essential for any modern researcher.
